How to use Hash Generator
Generate a SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 digest from text, or compare a generated digest with an expected value.
- Enter the exact source text and choose the SHA-2 algorithm.
- Generate the digest, or enter the expected digest for comparison.
- Check capitalization, whitespace, and line endings in the input if results differ.
Worked example
SHA-256 of the three lowercase characters abc is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad. Adding a newline changes the digest.
Limits and things to check
A hash is not encryption and cannot be decrypted. An unkeyed digest alone does not establish who created a message, and SHA-2 alone is not an appropriate password-storage scheme.
When should I use HMAC instead?
Use HMAC when both parties share a secret and need to authenticate message data. A plain hash is useful for comparing content but does not provide secret-key authentication.
